In this post, I’ll tell you when is the best time to buy plane tickets and you’ll find some unusual ways to find the cheapest option.
An airplane ticket for $5 seems to be nonsense but not when you know how to search!
The best time to buy plane tickets
The 60-day rule works perfectly. So book your flight not later than 1.5 to 2 months before the trip. Also, buy tickets on dates from mid-January until early March.
Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are when the ticket prices are the lowest. You also try to purchase your tickets on Tuesdays between 2 and 4 p.m.
If you’re planning a weekend flight it’s best to buy your tickets on a Friday night or Saturday. These are, usually, the best time to buy plane tickets
Airline system failures
No price calculator is perfect and sometimes they malfunction. This usually happens with complex flights. It’s not a law by any means, it’s more of luck. It’s almost impossible to buy a ticket to the city you need with the help of a system error but it’s perfect for a spontaneous vacation.
The website AirFareWatchDog.com has a top 50 fares section that is updated daily. Another site SecretFlying.com posts a selection of system errors daily. You better follow it on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated.
Also, HolidayPirates.com has an alert system for holidays and weekend deals in particular airports of departure.
The 24-hour rule
Check the same flight the next morning after you’ve booked it because search engines often set filters to default and may suggest cheaper options. If the price is lower you can cancel your booking and re-purchase your ticket.
In this case, you have to pay a small fee depending on the airline and booking platform. Check out Yapta.com to track prices for a particular flight and to change tickets if you need it.
The cheapest airlines
They are otherwise called budget Airlines and their policy is the best price you can get. Ryanair is one of the most popular budget airlines in Europe. It’s well known for its crazy discounts.
So how to use budget airline features using Ryanair as an example? Inspect the price chart of your airline. The cheapest tickets by Ryanair are 54 and 10 days before the flight. So in this case, this is the best time to buy your plane tickets.
Avoid popular cities
If you want to get to Paris don’t select its essential airport. Go with the smaller airports whose prices are much lower.
Don’t automatically put in a city’s largest airport. You can sometimes find cheaper flights if you go to a smaller airport or one in the nearby area.
Use other search engines
Rather than only low-cost Airlines as they track budget Airlines and system errors, however, don’t forget to check the airline company’s websites. On rare occasions, their fares might be lower.
A hidden city feature
This one is well known to experienced travelers. They hide their destination in the middle of the route. If you need to get to Istanbul don’t rush to book a direct flight because sometimes a flight to Rome with the transfer in Istanbul may be much cheaper.
Cheap ticket search engines
Their job is simple, analyze the prices among hundreds of Airlines for the route you need and sort them by price, state, time of flight, number of stops, and other factors.
Here’s a list of the most popular ones:
Be flexible on your travel dates
One of the most important things you can do when it comes to getting affordable flights happens before you even log onto your web browser. That’s because one of the factors that have the biggest influence on the price of a flight is the day you’re traveling.
So if you book your vacation off from work before you find a great flight you’ll be locked into flying on specific dates. That’s not ideal because the more flexible you are the more likely you are to find a great deal.
There are lots of myths out there that say that it’s cheapest to fly on a certain day of the week but you can probably ignore those since there isn’t much consistent evidence to back those claims up.
Switch to private browsing
If you’ve been on the internet lately you’ve probably noticed how prevalent targeted ads have become. Clearly, your browser is tracking every move you make online and sharing your info with advertisers.
Some say this can affect the price of your flights causing the cost to go up once you’ve searched a certain flight once or twice. To avoid this switch on private browsing before you begin your search.
Then you want to start with a great flight search engine. Your best bet is to search using multiple different search engines to ensure you’re not missing out on any great deals.
You should also check individual Airlines’ actual websites for deals that may not appear elsewhere. You can additionally research local Regional airlines that may not even appear in the bigger search engines.
Be flexible with your destination
Once you’ve chosen some search engines there are few tips and tricks you can use to make them work best for you.
First is using a flexible dates tool, so you can see which days seem to have the cheapest flights. And just like being flexible with dates, you can also be flexible with your destination.
If you want a vacation in Central America but don’t have a specific destination in mind you can be even more flexible with your destination by picking a place that is cheapest to fly into.
Set up a price alert
If you’re not able to be flexible with your travel dates or locations don’t despair. There are other options for you.
Let’s say you’re traveling for a wedding. So the days you have to fly are set in stone. You can set yourself up a price alert.
Lots of different search engines offer this option and it can be really helpful in showing you if prices are trending up or down.
Keep in mind though flights tend to get more expensive rather than less expensive as you get closer to your travel date. So don’t Bank on prices eventually dropping.
Tweak your search
The conventional wisdom is that you should book round trip tickets to get the best deal but times have changed and most of the time that’s not necessary anymore.
You can sometimes save money by booking your flights separately and using different airlines for each direction.
This mix and match technique can seem like more work but if you’re going to end saving hundreds of dollars it surely worth it.
Another trick to keep in mind is to always search for flights as a single flyer even if you’ll be traveling with others. Sometimes the search engines choose the highest ticket price for the group and show that one when in fact there are cheaper flights available.
Sometimes you have to step outside the box to find the best deals. Following different airlines on social media can be a great way to find promotions that wouldn’t be available to you elsewhere.
