In this post, I’m going to be showing you how to publish an ebook and make money passively.
I’ll literally take you through all of the stages that you would need to go through to actually create a profitable and really helpful ebook that you can sell it to any size audience.
So, I’m going to walk you through every single stage that you would actually need to go through if you are going to not just throw something together but actually create a really profitable, really great product as an ebook that you can continue to sell as your audience grows on whatever platform you prefer.
Now, I know that most people will probably just want to jump straight to stages 3 and 4 but without stages 1 and 2 your ebook is not going to be as helpful and therefore as profitable as it could be.
So, please make sure you do take the time to complete stages 1 and 2 if you’re really going to create a great product.
Plan to publish your ebook and make money
Stage 1 is the planning stage and this is really important. You can’t just publish an ebook and make a passive income by improvising your way to it.
You really need to think about the outcome.
Ask yourself these questions to figure out the outcome of your ebook.
What your ebook is going to actually be able to achieve for people? Is your ebook going to be just purely for entertainment purposes? Is it going to create some type of result for people? Is it going to teach people things? Is it going to be an opinion based ebook?
Whatever your idea, subject matter, skill, area of expertise, and passion start to brainstorm ideas and outcomes that you want people (the customers of that ebook) to be able to achieve.
It’s really important that you know this before proceeding because what you’ll actually find, if you don’t know the outcome, when you’re developing this product you’ll find yourself probably going off on a tangent and getting really lost in your own work because you don’t know exactly where you’re heading with what you’re creating.
Therefore, if you’re confused about a product so will your consumers. So you’ll have no testimonials, no reviews, and no one will continue to purchase it.
getting good testimonials and good reviews on your ebook are crucial because the majority of your buyers will search for some reviews before actually buying your ebook.
So make sure you actually know exactly what people are going to get out of purchasing this ebook before you even start to create it.
Also, with the planning stage, you actually want to start planning out what you are going to cover in this ebook.
So once you know the entire outcome for the ebook you should start planning out the product itself.
You need to figure out the following:
How long is it going to be?
Is it going to be in chapter, sections, or phases?
What each phase is going to cover?
How are you going to present it? (Is it going to be a workbook or just a reading style book? will it contain pictures?)
Plan all of those kinds of smaller details out in the beginning so you can really just start to map out each phase of your ebook.
It’s really going to help you when it comes time to put it together if you got a plan for each individual section rather than signing on a blank page from page one and trying to put it together page by page.
If you’ve got that plan there it’s going to be a lot easier for you to develop.
Do your Research before you publish an ebook and make money.
The second stage if you really want to create a profitable product, and this isn’t just for ebooks this is for any product you want to create in your business.
Go ahead and actually do some research, go out and have some conversations with people and say “hey this is my idea; this is what I’m thinking of creating, is this going to be beneficial to you? Would you buy this? And how much would you buy this for?”
So really start doing some of that consumer, and marketing research so that you can gather feedback and further, fine-tune your product.
It’s amazing that you have all these great ideas but you really do want to get feedback because sometimes our ideas could be better with the feedback and responses from others.
So go out with your plan, with that structure that you’ve put together and for example send it off to a couple of people being like “hey, does this look like something that you would purchase, if not why not? And how can I make it better?”
Identifying the gaps in your product is really important as well.
Before you publish an ebook and make money you need to make sure that you’re not getting offended by the feedback of others and actually implementing that to create an even better product before you even start developing it.
development of the ebook
Now, it’s time for stage 3 which is the development of the products.
My preferred way to create ebooks is in Canva.
So Canva is actually a free program that you can use where you can create a whole range of different Graphics.
This is really good for anyone who isn’t necessarily a design Oriented or the most kind of technically design creative type person because Canva has a lot of templates that you can work off of.
You can tailor them to be your own, you can create PDF files in there, and you can create them looking a lot better than if you were just going to create this in word and then transforming that into a PDF document.
Canva is really good and I suggest that for anyone who is a beginner and want to publish an ebook and make money.
If you are a little bit more advanced or if you are a lot better with programs in the Adobe suite then my suggestion would be to go with InDesign.
And even if you aren’t design orientated but your Tech orientated, what you could do with InDesign is to buy a template from somewhere like creative Market.
You could buy a template for a magazine, a presentation, annual report, whatever kind of design that look like your plan.
Then, obviously, tailor the information in that to suit your ebook but you would have to edit that in InDesign and honestly the program, for me, I find it complicated.
I just find Canva to be so much easier, so much less time-consuming.
So, the options are there depending on your skill level but my suggestion is to go with Canva.
So all you need to do is spend the time and make sure that you through this development Stage you’re working off of that plan and still trying to get feedback as you go along as well.
If you find it difficult to follow your plan or to stay productive I recommend you read 3 Productivity improvement rules to properly plan your day and How to stay motivated to work hard.
I would do the first copy, send it out to a couple of people and get feedback.
Make sure that you are having people read it before you actually put it together as a final product because there might be something that you need to explain that just don’t make sense to other people, there might be some gaps in the information because you’re basing it on your own area of expertise and often you know more than other people do. So when explaining things we often leave gaps.
Therefore, make sure you really are having people test that, make sure you’re having people proof rated your ebook.
This is something that is so important; you need to have a couple of people proofread this document.
You’re selling this for money so it’s really important that you understand even if it’s just for $5 you need to have a level of professionalism behind this product (remember that your final goal is not to sell your product once. You want to make your customers satisfied so they recommend you to others and give good feedback).
So make sure that your ebook is proofread, test it with other people, and that it’s really easy for people to understand and to enjoy.
Once you actually got your finalized product with all of the feedback and you made all of the corrections then you save it as a PDF file.
Whether you did end up creating your ebook with word or InDesign or anything like that the best file option for you is to just save it as a PDF file, save it to your desktop and make sure you back that up as well on an external hard drive or the cloud. You don’t want to lose your work!
The final stage to publish an ebook and make money is obviously distribution and that is how you actually go about selling it.
There are multiple ways to sell your ebook online but the best ones that I have and recommend to anyone who does or is considering a website is to use either WordPress with the Plugin WooCommerce or to use Squarespace commerce, or Shopify.
WooCommerce and Squarespace commerce
So if you’re going to be selling things on Squarespace you must upgrade to the commerce version but if you’ve already got a WordPress site then you can easily use the plugin WooCommerce.
Now, with both WooCommerce and Squarespace you will have the option to create a digital product.
So, pretty much all you need to do is create an ebook, take the front page of your product and use that as the product image, write a description about what your ebook is about, remember that people like results so talk about the outcome and about what people can expect from it, talk about what people will get if they purchase it, that’s how to make sales.
Then, all you need to do is upload that PDF file to your WooCommerce or Squarespace, and then when someone does purchase that product then they will be sent an automatic email that will be delivering them that ebook.
It’s really important that you do it this way because you can’t just have people pay you either through PayPal or something like that and then rely on manually sending them that product because if your asleep and somebody from the other side of the world buys it they can be pretty upset when they don’t get that product sent to them immediately.
Shopify is an e-commerce platform where you can create an online store and sell your ebook.
Shopify is great if you don’t have a website because it makes it extremely easy to create your store and products. It contains a lot of themes and templates no matter what the subject of your ebook is you’ll find what suits you.
The final thing is that you do need to have a payment system for you to be able to accept those payments.
Squarespace Commerce, WooCommerce, and Shopify integrate with a lot of the payment systems but my suggestion is to have PayPal and Stripe.
PayPal and Stripe are very trusted I’ve been using them for a while and never had any problems with them.
Now, you need to make sure to test the entire sales process yourself by buying the ebook, you can put the price at $0 and test if it will be delivered to your email inbox.
Make sure that you’re actually testing everything yourself so it’s working as it needs to before you actually start promoting that ebook to people.
If you don’t have a website and you don’t want to create one you should use Amazon Kindle publishing, it’s a huge platform and with time, if you have a great ebook, you can rank on the front page and make a lot of money (if you don’t have a website and know nothing about marketing then I suggest you publish your ebook on Amazon Kindle).
With Amazon Kindle publishing you wouldn’t have to concentrate on marketing your ebook as much as you would if you publish it on your own website because it’s a huge platform with millions of customers so you’ll get some exposure organically.
My recommendation if you use Amazon Kindle publishing is to produce multiple ebooks because you wouldn’t have to concentrate on marketing them as much. So you can use the time and effort that you would spend on marketing your ebook on creating another one and increase your income.
Marketing (this is after you publish your ebook)
There are two main types of marketing:
With free marketing, your goal is to get the word out there about your ebook. You should search for bloggers on Pinterest that are in the same niche of your ebook, contact them, and send them the ebook and offer an affiliate link so they get a percentage when someone purchases the product through their link.
If they like your ebook and the deal you’re offering they’ll write about it and you start to get some exposure.
Now, don’t expect that every blogger you reach to will agree or get back to you so don’t get discouraged at first just keep going and with the time you will start to get some sales.
Now, when you start getting sales and good reviews you can stop your marketing campaign because your product will get sales just through word of mouth and recommendations from other people who bought it and enjoyed it.
Other bloggers will start writing about it and you’ll get more exposure which means that you’ll get sales on autopilot.
When you reach this point I recommend you write another ebook because you don’t need to do any more work on your first one. Now, you’re making a passive income.
You should make another one and expand your income.
With paid marketing, I really recommend that you take a course about this because there is a lot of things that you need to be aware of before you lunch any type of ads and you will lose way more money before you see any kind of results.
So I really can’t stress this enough DON’T LUNCH PAID ADS if you don’t have any knowledge about online marketing.
So, how to publish an ebook and make money passively?
First of all, you need to figure out the outcome of your ebook, what you want to write about and how will it help the readers?
Then, figure out how you are going to present it, in chapters or sections and what will you write about in each section?
Next, start doing your research. Ask people about your idea would it be beneficial to them? If they would buy it and make adjustments to your plan if necessary (maybe you need to add a section or delete one or you need to change your approach on a specific point).
Now, it’s time to start developing your ebook. I recommend you use Canva to develop it. Just follow your plan and don’t get distracted (your first product will never be perfect). Make the first copy and send it to a couple of friends and get their feedback.
When you’re ready to start distributing. If you have a website you can use WooCommerce or if you want to build a website you can use Squarespace commerce or Shopify. Set up your payment processors I recommend PayPal and Stripe.
If you don’t want to make a website then publish it on Amazon Kindle.
Finally, you start marketing your ebook by contacting bloggers and online influencers or by paid marketing which you need to take a course on before you try it.
When you publish your ebook and start making money passively it’s time to write another one and expand your income.
Thanks for your time
